If you’ve been researching durable and stylish roofing options, you’ve probably come across stone coated metal roofing. It’s often marketed as the perfect blend of strength and curb appeal—but here at Roof Smith, we take a different stance.

While stone coated metal roofing has some merits, we don’t recommend it as a long-term solution for most of our customers. Instead, we offer time-tested, high-performance alternatives like clay tile, concrete tile, presidential IR shingles, and standing seam metal. Here's why.

What Is Stone Coated Metal Roofing?

Stone coated metal roofing is made of lightweight steel panels coated with a layer of stone chips. It’s designed to mimic traditional roofing styles like tile or shake while offering the supposed durability of metal. On paper, it sounds like a great option—but in the real world, we’ve seen some concerns that give us pause.

Why We Don't Recommend Stone Coated Metal Roofing

⚠️ Maintenance & Durability Concerns

While it’s marketed as impact-resistant, the stone coating can erode over time, especially in high-wind or hail-prone areas. This leads to fading, chipping, and a diminished look and performance.

⚠️ Cost vs. Longevity

Stone coated metal roofing often comes with a premium price tag—but in our experience, it doesn’t always provide the long-term performance homeowners expect for that investment.

⚠️ Limited Local Support

Compared to more established roofing systems, stone coated metal may require specialty parts and labor, which can complicate repairs and drive up costs.

What Roof Smith Recommends Instead

We believe in proven systems that deliver premium performance, especially in the harsh climates of Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. Our top recommendations:

Clay Tile Roofing

Timeless style, excellent durability, and natural thermal protection—perfect for upscale homes.

Concrete Tile Roofing

Cost-effective, fire-resistant, and built to withstand high winds and hail.

Presidential IR & Designer Shingles

Luxury asphalt shingles that offer impact resistance and eye-catching curb appeal.

Standing Seam Metal Roofing

Clean lines, long lifespan, and superior weather protection. It’s one of the most popular and effective systems we install.

Trust Roof Smith for What Really Works

We don’t just install roofs—we stand behind them. That’s why we’ll always recommend what we know will protect your home, look beautiful, and provide long-term value.
